Join a.p. and Edition Taube on Friday, May 6th from 4:00 - 7:00 PM for a book launch and signing for artist Shinchiro Shiraishi’s photo book 𝘚𝘢𝘮𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘢.
Shot on the coast in Dungeness, 𝘚𝘢𝘮𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘢 crafts a visual language from the rough textures and harsh beauty of the English coastline, mixing the man-made and the natural across the rough grain of Shiraishi’s black-and-white photographs. Akin to W.G. Sebald’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯, 𝘚𝘢𝘮𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘢 explores the capacity of landscape to create an affect of contemplation, memory, and associative thinking. ⚪️ Across a images printed on glossy, reflective pages, and those on rough, uncoated paper, 𝘚𝘢𝘮𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘢 evokes dualities present in this stark landscape, of calm and chaos, life and death; a world grown on pebbles, stranded on the edge of England.
Shinchito Shiraishi is an artist from Japan based in Berlin. 𝘚𝘢𝘮𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘢 is his debut artists’ book. ⚪️ At the event, Shiraishi will be available to sign books and discuss his practice; he will also present prints of photos featured in the book.
