‘Presence/Absence’ is published in conjunction with an exhibition at White Cube, Hong Kong. It spans the years 1999 to 2013, wherein conceptual artist Bruce Nauman is a clear presence in four of the five video works presented, while his studio is the focus of the last piece. The videos demonstrate several of Nauman’s recurring themes: using his body as “material”, addressing perceptual issues, and scrutinising differences among sets of subjects. The variation among the works is notable. In ‘Setting a Good Corner’, for instance, he performs a necessary task at his New Mexico ranch, but in ‘Bullet Illusion / Pencil Illusion’ he uses the editing process to create a parallax-like image.
